  2. Dear Father,

I also share with your concerns. I agree with you, ‘Roman Catholics’ are those who follow the ‘Roman Rite’ that is ‘Latin rite’. We are ‘Syrian Catholics’. Our Rite is ‘Syro Chaldean’ As you have righly said, ‘Syro Malabar’ is a name imposed on us. Menesis did not change the name, none of the Portuguese Bishops did not change our name until the Melus schism. When Melusians used the term Chaldeans, the then Vicar Apostolic started using the name ‘Malabar Syrians’ instead of ‘Chaldean Syrians of Malabar’.

Our forefathers did raise strong objections to it. In 1895, a memorandum was sent to the Pope showing our dissatisfaction about changing our community’s name from ‘Malabar Chaldaeic Syrians’ to ‘Malabar Syrians’. They confirmed in their letter that ‘Chaldaeic Syrians’ is our National name and argued that this change of name is contrary to the name of our liturgy ‘Syro chaldaeic’ printed in 1874 showing their awareness of our church identity based on our rite and rituals in the liturgy.

It seems that Rome accepted the arguments and used the term ‘Ecclesia Ritus Chaldaici Malabarensium’ in the Bull when the Diocese of Thalassery was established in AD 1953. Then how did we end up with the name ‘Syro Malabar’?

It is the native leadership who were competing for showing their obedience to those in Rome to get better positions. They wanted to be in conformity to ‘Roman Rite’ and to be directly under Rome and achieved the statuses of Arch Bishops and later Cardinals. Some of them even wanted to forget our 2000 year old identity to find a new identity. As William Macomber has clearly identified in 1977, the hierarchy of Syro Malabar Church is aiming to reform in terms of Indianisation and to unite with the ‘Roman Rite- Latin Rite’ in India when they are also sufficiently Indianised.( William Macomber, A History of the Chaldean mass, Journal of Assyrian Academic Studies, Vol XI No 2 , 1997, pp70-81 originally published in Worship, Vol 51 No2 1977, pp107-120)

Now, who knows what is our identity, to fix a name? Our people are confused. Our leadership doesn’t know what our identity is.

I think your articles are throwing lights into the hearts of our people to raise the awareness of our identity. I hope once the people are aware of our identity, no one can change it.

  3. Dear Mr.Thomas Antony,

Thank you very much for your valuable comment.

The name signifies the identity. If I have no name I have no identity. God revealed His name to Moses (Ex 3.14). God the Father asks mar Youseph to name the Son Iso. These all shows the importance of name. Among Mar THoma Nazranees the house name is very important. If someone makes mistake in our name we should correct it. In Tamil Nadu the government has changed the name Madras to Chennai, likewise in Maharashtra Bombay to Mumbay. It was a going back to their own original culture and tradition. By this historic decision they were respecting their culture and tradition.

    In the case of the so called Syro Malabar Church also a going back to its root is necessary. It should be both in renaming the Church and finding out the rich spiritual treasures of this Church. I call it the so called Syro Malabar Church, because this name in any way does not express the rich heritage and identity of Mar Thoma Nazranees. Let me quote from Geevarghes Chediath a well known historian from Malankara Catholic Church;
"...many have forgotten the meaning of their existence. This Church has lost even the name 'the Indian Church of Mar Thoma'. Instead it has given the name 'Syro Malabar' that does not reveal the identity of this church in any way". (G. Chediath, SABHACHARITHRAPADANANGAL, OIRSI, Kottayam 1996, 157.

  4. Good observation Father James !

This is one of the several expressions by which our Church is identified by ourselves as an offshoot of the Latin Church. We can see several such 'wrong uses' in the Liturgy, Administration, Traditions etc.

In some areas of Kerala, Syro Malabars are identified as Romans. In Thrissur, Syro Malabars are called 'Romakkaar' (Romans) by the Surayis. Historically, this is justified. Because, in the name of Rome that we acted against Roccos and Melus.

Another reason why we use RC is the problem with the abbreviation. In India, SC has a different meaning. Hence, nobody likes to be identified as a Syrian Catholic (SC). Moreover, the abbreviations SM (Syro Malabar), MN or MTN (Mar Thoma Nasrani) are never popularized.

In most of our School Certificates, our religion is 'Christian' and Caste is 'RC' or 'RCSC.' There are exceptions in the case some, whose parents are very careful. They insist that the Caste is entered as Syro Malabar or Mar Thoma Nasrani. Even in the Census entries the mistake of RC or RCSC are crept in because either we are not giving much care to it or we are ignorant of it.

There is another dimension also for the use of the term RC or Roman Catholic. The members of the Roman Church (under the Provinces of Thiruvananthapuram, Varappuzha etc) are identified as LC (Latin Catholic). LC is identified as a Community/Caste name and even the government recognizes it in that way. Hence, RC was there free and we grabbed it.

Remember, we were directly under Rome till 1992 December 16. Even after 'becoming' a Sui Iuris Church, if we are not able to assume that and act accordingly who is to be blamed for.

We work as some dioceses under a big Malayalam-Syro-Latin province of Ernakulam-Angamly than as part of a Church in communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

  6. Hi acha your dream is great, but we all know that it can never come true under the current situations.
Anyway I just want to inform you something, which you may be knowing. There are two independent episcopal churches with st Thomas tradition in India, one is the Malankara orthodox syrian church which can be treated as the mother church of all the Malankara churches, and the Malankara MarThoma syrian church or MarThoma church of Malabar. Both are truely Indian church. None of the churches are considered as purely Indian by a set of authorities.
